  • La Sella Golf will host, from July 20 to 23, one of the major events on the international women's professional golf calendar.
  • Care has been taken down to the smallest detail of the field, to offer a strategic and exciting challenge to the LET players.

One month to celebrate the expected La Sella Open , the 20 to 23 July, the field of La Sella Golf (Dénia, Alicante) already has everything prepared to host one of the great events on the women's professional golf calendar.

- La Sella has worked hard to ensure that the course is in the best possible condition to welcome the best international golfers. Even the smallest detail has been taken care of. Since the greens perfectly cut and fairways impeccable, right down to the pruning of trees and the reconditioning of bunkers and roads. Every aspect of the course has been attended to with the aim of preparing it for competition.

To this end, we have worked in close collaboration between the teams of La Sella and Olazabal Design, along with experts in agronomy and landscaping, to ensure that each hole provides an exciting and strategic challenge for the players of the Ladies European Tour.

A course entirely designed and renovated by JM Olazábal

La Sella Golf It has been chosen by the LET for the suitability of its facilities and for its route of exceptional technical quality and incomparable scenic beauty. Designed by José María Olazábal, the field is located in a privileged environment, the Natural Park Montgó. It has 27 holes, which distinguishes it as the largest course on the Costa Blanca and one of the reference courses within the Valencian Community and Spain.

Recently, La Sella Golf has undertaken an ambitious renovation of the course, which has provided it with new, more technological, sustainable and competitive facilities, which have managed to increase the already recognized reputation of this course within Spanish and European golf.

The improvements made to the course and all of its facilities, with special mention for the comprehensive renovation of its irrigation system, the retouching of various holes and a new practice field, place La Sella at the forefront in matters related to the environment and competitiveness, postulating this course as a top-level golf destination, both for professionals and amateur players.

José María Olazábal, a designer proud of his first field

A fundamental figure for La Sella is José María Olazábal, award Prince of Asturias to the sport, winner of two green jackets at the Augusta Masters and captain of the European Ryder Cup team that produced the "Miracle of Medinah" in 2012. The presence of Olazabal with La Sella Golf, united since 1990 for its construction and 30 years later for its comprehensive agronomic reform, "has been the definitive support for a project that will face a stage full of enthusiasm and ambitious objectives", in the words of the president of the Board of Directors of La Sella Golf , Luis Iglesias.

The history of La Sella Golf and Olazábal has been linked since, in 1986, this iconic Spanish player came to Dénia, “a very beautiful area with a great climate, which allows you to play golf all year round”, as he himself describes.

A few years later, in 1992, José María Olazábal's idyll with La Sella Golf became established by becoming his first challenge as a golf course designer. Today, the Basque player looks back and reviews the excellent conditions and qualities of this course, which have been improving over time. “The first 18 holes have matured well over the years. At first it was simple, but the fields are living beings, the vegetation grows and the forest mass becomes obstacles that make it a challenge. With the last 9 holes, I am very happy, they still have to mature, but people have a lot of fun playing them”, explains the Spanish golfer.

With the reform in 2019-20-21 of the irrigation system, the irrigation platforms teas, the complexes of green, bunkers and the different improvements in streets and rough, “we have prepared the field for a more technical future. We are prepared to be able to host international competitions”, says Olazábal, adding that he is proud that “today, these facilities are on the professional golf calendar”.

After so many years and so much work in this field, the legendary Basque player says he feels “one more of the La Sella Golf family” and maintain the same illusion of the first day. “I am delighted with the celebration of La Sella Open, with the effort that has been made to support the women's golf and to this sport in general, and to contribute my small grain of sand to what, without a doubt, will be a great event”, he adds José María Olazábal.

As he demonstrates with his words, the Gipuzkoan golfer continues to have a special affection and pride towards this course, which now, with the celebration of La Sella Open , takes a big step in its consolidation as a venue for professional tournaments at an international level. “It is a technical and complete field, which must be played. The par threes are solid and the par fours are tough, but you have holes where you can recover, there are several affordable par fives. Without a doubt, it is the most demanding course in this area and that meets the challenge that a golfer wants. La Sella is the best course in the Mediterranean”, affirms the teacher from Hondarribia emphatically.
