Hospital HLA San Carlos continues to bet on the quality and commitment with its patients, now with the acquisition of equipment for neurophysical tests and other specialties.
Electromyography and electroencephalography tests will help the initial diagnosis of pathology affecting the central nervous system (electroencephalogram) and the peripheral nervous system (electromyography).
“This new acquisition tries to include the vast majority of neurophysiological tests that are done in medium to large hospitals. In addition, it offers the possibility of conducting non-invasive studies, in a fast time, and without the need to travel ", says Dr. Juan Salas, a neurologist at HLA Hospital San Carlos Office of Denia and adds that "Also, the professionals give us the tools to reach the diagnosis before, and that guides us to take different treatment options such as rehabilitative, pharmacological or surgical procedures more suitable for each patient".
An interdisciplinary team
This new system integrates in the same mobile device the two large groups of neurophysiology tests: the electroencephalograph and the electromyography.
Electroencephalography is used to assess cerebral electrical activity, fundamental in epilepsy or any process with low state of consciousness, and to a lesser degree, in other general pathologies such as dementias or in broad studies of differential diagnosis of patients with neurological clinic, such as headache. Therefore, this technique is especially beneficial, in addition to the mentioned pathologies, for studies of cognitive or complementary affection in the analysis of any lesion or brain symptomatology.
“The process in this test consists of placing a cap with electrodes on the patient for 20-30 minutes usually. He has to remain calm, and sometimes he has to try to fall asleep, spend more time or do activations with light and breathing ", explains the professional of the HLA San Carlos.
On the other hand, electromyography is used for multiple functions, assessing diseases of peripheral nerves, muscles that orient towards lumbar or cervical roots, or muscular injuries proper, that is to say, as complementary test in a study of herniated discs, lumbar, sensorial or engines in hands. "It is highly recommended to complement the diagnosis of spinal pathology or any sensitive or motor process in the extremities", specifies the specialist, and adds that "The electrodes placed in the region to be stimulated are used, or by means of a needle it is assessed which muscles can be affected in the different diseases".
Also included in the device acquired by the center are visual potentials for the study of optic nerve, potential brainstem, aid in hearing problems, and somatosensory for the study of the sensory pathway.
By stimuli in nerves or by means of needle in muscle are diagnosed processes that affect nerves, limbs, muscular diseases. These are complementary techniques that can serve different specialists.
