New home for Dénia toys: the Library collects a unique collection in Spain

21 December 2023 - 16: 10

This morning a new bibliographic collection that addresses the history of toys was presented at the Dénia Municipal Library. The collection consists of around thirty books, many of which were donated, and some copies that are exclusive to this library, not found in any other in the country. According to the area councillor, Raúl García de la Reina, this initiative has given rise to one of the most exclusive book sections in Spain.

The presentation took place at the Municipal Library, where the importance of this collection was highlighted, which covers various aspects related to the history and evolution of toys over time. The collaboration between the Department of Culture and the Associació Amics del Joguet de Dénia was highlighted, which has made it possible to collect valuable bibliographic material on a topic that arouses interest in both children and adults.

It is worth mentioning that the collection includes books obtained through donations, as is the case of some unique copies donated by Juan Fernández Moro, an Asturian resident in Dénia, passionate about the world of toys, to which he has been involved professionally, and a member of the association Friends of Joguet de Dénia. Fernández Moro has also been collaborating with the Library for some time, advising on possible acquisitions and where to locate them, since it is a "very specific material, with very little published bibliography and with a distribution that is difficult to access if you do not belong to that world." », explained the Councilor for Culture. The diversity of the titles and the rarity of some copies make this section of the library positioned as one of the most important in the country in terms of literature specialized in toys.

To facilitate consultation of this section, the Library has prepared a triptych with the bibliography on the toy it has. The triptych is available in paper format at the Municipal Library and can be consulted online on its website, in the Featured Collections section, and also in the catalog of the Generalitat's public reading network.

The most accessible historical toys

But the collaboration of the Amics del Joguet association, chaired by Maite Carrió, goes further. In addition to the bibliographic collection, the inclusion of a toy exhibition was announced that will have its dedicated space within the library. It is an exhibition space on the ground floor of the Library with a small sample of toys and toy documents donated by the association, some from its own collection and others that the entity has already donated to the Museu dels Joguets de Dénia, which also collaborates in the initiative by providing material for the exhibition.

The first exhibition in this space is dedicated to toy animals, all from Dianense manufacturers and from different periods and materials. The theme of the toys on display will change every quarter.

The president of Amics del Joguet de Dénia, Maite Carrió, has highlighted among the pieces currently on display one from the Germans Ferchen factory, "one of the oldest in our collection and which was given to us by a company worker"; a papier-mâché crocodile bird from the Deniera LUDI factory and a wooden dog bird from the Josefa Sauquillo factory. In addition, a display case has been arranged with sheets of toy catalogs from Dianense manufacturers, dated between 1920 and 1960; and another with a selection of books from the Toy section of the library. On the walls, graphic material such as the poster of the 1st Antique Toy and Collecting Fair that the association organized in Dénia in 1997, a sheet of a toy designed by the Dianense Honorato Salvador Gadea or an image of workers from the Germans workshop Ferchen.

On the other hand, the Toy Museum has lent 2 dwarf figures for the occasion, replicas of pieces from the José Monllor Llinares factory. The Councilor for Culture has expressed his gratitude to Maite Carrió, Juan Fernández Moro and the Amics del Joguet de Dénia association, he hopes that the new section will be well received among the Library's user public and has made a call addressed "to anyone who have bibliography or objects on this topic, so that they think about donating or transferring them temporarily to guarantee their conservation and that everyone can enjoy them.
