MITECO will invest more than 14 million euros in the recovery of Les Deveses beach

22 July 2022 - 10: 46

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has started the tender for the regeneration works of the beach of Les Deveses from Denia. The objective of this action is to stop the regression and reach a stable beach width in Dénia, since in this part of the Dianense coast it has suffered, for years, a serious problem of erosion.

The project to regenerate the Dianense coast (Les Deveses) has a budget of 14,7 million and derives from the Strategy for the Protection of the south coast of Valencia, which covers the coastline between the Port of Valencia and the Port of Denia in Alicante.

This roadmap determines the main problems that exist in this coastal area and proposes various solutions to be adopted according to the needs of the coast.

With regard to the problem of Les Deveses, this coastal area suffers from the loss of sand due to the inversion of sediment transport that occurs on the Oliva coast and the barrier effect generated, on the one hand, by the port of Dénia, and on the other the breakwaters of the beaches of Setla and Mirarrosa. The lack of contributions to compensate for erosion gives rise to the regression of the coastline, which translates into a risk of flooding and affecting real estate, causing its deterioration.

For this reason, the objective of the project is to stop the regression of Les Deveses beach and recover a stable beach width, with a minimum of 30 meters, with materials with characteristics similar to those existing, guaranteeing its future stability in a sustainable manner.

The project, which has an execution period of 12 months, foresees the regeneration of the beaches with the contribution of some 650.000 m3 of sand from the underwater deposit off the coast of Sueca-Cullera. The creation of dune ridges and the construction of breakwaters where strictly necessary are also planned.

I suppose they will build a breakwater on Les Deveses beach, Denia, because otherwise, in two storms, all the work done will be lost, since there are many currents in this area. I say this from experience, since I have spent the whole of my life on that beach.

And how are they going to do it to stop the rise of the sea? 14 million is a robbery.
