In the effort to preserve and protect the cultural heritage of Dénia, the Government Board has given the green light today to the request for funds from the Department of Culture. This application aims to benefit for one more year from aid intended for the promotion, recovery, maintenance, conservation and protection of dry stone architecture in the territory.

With an estimated cost of €9.998, the Dénia City Council plans to carry out the third phase of the rehabilitation project of the terrace retaining walls in the Castell, a heritage site recognized as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC).

This new action will focus on the terraced area of Vila Vella. In previous years, with the help of these subsidies, the dry stone walls of sectors III and V were restored in 2018, and in 2023 financing was obtained for the restoration of a total of 11 dry stone walls of sectors I, II and IV.

The execution of the work proposed for 2024, which will end with sector VI to improve access to the Palau del Governador, the city's future interpretation center, will cover a significant part of Vila Vella. The Basic Project for the rehabilitation of the dry stone terraces of Vila Vella de Dénia includes actions in six sectors of the southern flank of the promontory of the castle, between the lower and upper wall enclosure.

The primary objective of these interventions, prior to future documentation, description and dissemination actions, is to consolidate the protection of an ephemeral heritage, constantly threatened by natural erosion processes. In addition, rehabilitation programs with traditional techniques promote the continuity of the knowledge and skills of stonemasons and master builders.

El Ethnology Museum de Dénia has extensive experience in research and dissemination of the heritage specificity of dry stone architecture, especially with regard to terraces and walls.

Likewise, Dénia has joined the regional pact "Carta pel Paisatge i la Pedra Seca", signed in November 2019, which has as one of its objectives to promote the cultural landscape as a key factor for sustainable local development.

It should be noted that the dry stone construction technique was recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2018.
