New specimens of fin whales are seen off the coast of Dénia

09 July 2018 - 11: 23

We know that it is the usual thing, but it does not stop surprising us an image like the one that only a few days ago the Coast Guard of Dénia captured: a rorqual whale sailing off the coast of Dianense.

The fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), is the second largest whale in the world, with dimensions of up to 24 meters, and it is common to see it prowling our coast especially in May and June, when they make their way to the Balearic Islands.

During 2017 a total of 134 sightings of cetaceans were reported in the Comunitat Valenciana, of which 73 occurred in the Cabo de San Antonio area. A figure that is very far from the second place where more cetaceans were seen, the Columbretes Islands, with 27 sightings in 2017. It should be noted that this figure refers to sightings, and not to individuals, whose number has not been counted and is higher.

The sightings on the coast of Dénia, both from land and sea, are especially common between the months of May to September, when we visit the common whale, one of the largest whales in the world. The figures show that cetaceans have a special predilection for the Dénia coast, especially between the Molinell river beach and the Cabo de San Antonio Marine Reserve.
