A day at sea: fishing for the red prawn of Dénia

12 October 2023 - 09: 00

Have you ever wondered how the Dénia red shrimp is fished, why the domination of origin falls on the capital of the Marina Alta and not in municipalities like Xàbia or Gandia, or what is the reason why its price is so high? We have written dozens of news and reports on the subject, but we believe that it is about time that the person who knows best all these answers told you: their protagonists.

In this documentary, different generations of Dénia shrimp fishermen tell their daily experience in a very hard job that goes unnoticed. In addition, they teach us how fishing has changed over the decades and the new problems faced by families who continue to live from the sea.

We get on board the Franjumar to closely follow how its day unfolds:

  1. Teresa says:

What a beautiful report it is a vision of the sea that those of us from the interior do not know and you only see the price of the shrimp and I think it is justified
Much encouragement to continue bringing this delicacy to Denia

  2. Joseph says:

Good comment. The Dénia shrimp is a typical product of its commercialization. Anyone who wants to pay should do so. Stimulates the economy. They screw you over and take advantage of you everywhere in life.

  3. Tourism is ruin says:

Previously, no one wanted the shrimp, and they threw it away, and the fishermen took them to their homes for consumption along with the whitebait, I know this from experience.

    The rest is pure invention.

It has the price it has due to demand, if there were more supply, the price would be cheaper, but the "Denia shrimp" is limited. And whoever wants it will have to pay gold prices for it. The only thing tourism and gastronomy do is worsen the situation by increasing demand and having more economic means to purchase it. Since if a restaurant buys Denia shrimp, it does so knowing that it is going to sell it, even more expensively to its diner, and if that restaurant offers that shrimp, it is because it is a solvent restaurant.

The day that tourism falls, that the trashy restaurants stop exploiting the price of shrimp, and that the rage and fashion pass away from people, like with sea urchins, well then we will talk about something else, or that, or they will become extinct at the price of gold.
