They place the Hospital of Dénia as an expert center in the management of blood transfusion

February 08 from 2023 - 13: 17

El Hospital de Dénia is an expert center in blood transfusion management practices and is in positions of excellence in some common surgical procedures.

The latest data published by MAPBM (Maturity Assessment in Patient Blood Management) place the Dianense center at an expert level in the rate of transfusions in surgical procedures, such as hip and knee replacement surgery, open and laparoscopic colorectal oncology surgery and abdominal hysterectomy.

The MAPBM index is an evaluation model that allows the identification of transfusion variability by procedures in clinical practices that are carried out in transfusion, as well as the use of the so-called three PBM pillars to improve transfusion rates. The objective is to help hospitals adapt their clinical practice to reduce unnecessary or avoidable transfusions and the use of a scarce and invaluable resource such as blood.

previous awards

The Dénia Hospital has already been awarded twice -2022 and 2018- for its rate of progression in good practices in Patient Blood Management. Among the 51 Spanish hospitals currently attached to the project, there are reference centers such as the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid, the Clínic or the Vall d'Hebrón in Barcelona. In 2022, it was also a finalist for Best Hospital Without Cardiac Surgery.

Inappropriate or avoidable blood transfusion is an essential practice and has a significant impact on the clinical evolution of the patient. For this reason, the World Health Organization -WHO- has been promoting the development of multidisciplinary programs since 2010, generically known as Patient Blood Management with the aim of ensuring that the patient arrives at surgery in ideal conditions to avoid inappropriate blood transfusion.
