What happens to the turtles that nest in Dénia? The video that explains the entire journey of the eggs

25 June 2023 - 09: 00

In recent days Dénia has received the exceptional visit of three sea turtles that have come close to our beaches to lay their eggs. Last week it was at the Marineta Cassiana, and three nights ago the same thing happened in Punta del Raset y Marines, cases that were followed by the experts of Fundació Oceanogràfic.

These curious visitors who have chosen Dénia to set up their nests have been forced to move here due to climate change. It is not usual to see this in Dénia, much less so many times in a row.

Every time a turtle spawns, a hundred eggs are deposited in the sand. On these beaches, which are very frequented by people during the day, the danger to the hatchlings is obvious. That is why the deployment that has been witnessed these days is activated, where the veterinarians of Fundació Oceanogràfic act urgently to monitor the process and remove the nest. But what about the eggs?

Most of them are taken to a protected area where they can hatch and reach the water more safely. Specifically, they are deposited on a protected beach in El Saler, in Valencia. However, in the case of the eggs that were deposited in Les Marines on Thursday night, about twenty were kept in the Oceanogràfic incubators to form part of the 'Head-starting' project, which aims to increase survival during the first few months of life and getting them big enough to avoid most predators once they return to the sea.

Meanwhile, the mother underwent an ultrasound and a blood test and the technicians from the Polytechnic University of Valencia and the University of Valencia, as they usually do, installed a satellite transmitter that will allow her to know her follow-up in the coming months and expand knowledge about the biology and routes of these animals.

What to do if you witness a turtle spawning?

If you witness a similar event, you should call 112 immediately and you have to get away from the place, being careful not to step on the turtle's trail, without making noise and, of course, without touching it.
