Life expectancy is the most widely used indicator to make comparisons on the incidence of mortality in different populations and, based on this, on the health conditions and level of development of a population.

Life expectancy at birth in men and women has increased significantly in recent decades. In addition, in recent years, the difference between men and women in years of life expectancy at birth and 65 years has declined.

The key aspect in the evolution of the last decades has been the improvement of life expectancy in the elderly and advanced age. The sustained reduction in the mortality rate at these ages has led to an increase in the number of these people in the population as a whole, although the number of older women is considerably higher.
