November 20 from 2019 - 10: 56

El Hospital de Dénia, in collaboration with the NGO Jávea Cancer Care, celebrated its First Oncology Day yesterday. The event was opened by the Managing Director of the Department of Health of Dénia -DSD-, Luis Carretero; the Vice President and Director of Care for Cancer Care Jávea, Joyce Glenn and the Head of the Oncology Service of the DSD and Director of the ECMOR Chair, Joan Manel Gasent.

The objective of the meeting was the update of the diagnosis, treatment and investigation on the cases of patients of the Department of Health of Dénia (DSD), diagnosed with colon, breast and gynecological cancer.

The day was developed around two round tables. In the first, dedicated to colon cancer, aspects related to the clinical practice of patients diagnosed with colon cancer and treated at the Dénia Hospital were discussed; as well as the line of research that is being carried out from the Molecular Oncology Laboratory. In this sense, the results of the clinical research on the mutational profile in metastatic colon cancer were presented.

The study is being developed on several levels. In the phase of sequencing and genetic identification they have been located 113 pathogenic or highly pathogenic genetic variants -Which have a fundamental implication with proteins- that affect the normal function and behavior of cells.

The clinical study has also addressed the field of pharmacogenetics to adapt the oncological drugs according to the mutations found in each patient. Along the clinical research it was found that, of the 113 pathogenic variants, 16% had a direct implication with the pharmacological treatment, reducing its effectiveness.

On the second table, which had the collaboration of a patient, the breast and gynecological cancer. The Head of Oncology of the DSD, Joan Manel Gasent, the pathology professor of the DSD, Juan Laforga and the head of the Molecular Oncology Laboratory-ECMOR, Juan Ramón Berenguer participated. The speakers explained the clinical and pathological approach of the patients from an assistance point of view and made known the clinical research programs that are being carried out in the Molecular Oncology Laboratory.
