El Hospital de Dénia, together with the University Clinic of Valencia, this summer has presented a presentation at the European Congress on Heart Failure, the most prestigious international forum in the specialty. The study recently received the award for the best communication in Clinical Cardiology at the Congress of the Valencian Society of Cardiology.
The communication, presented by doctors Julia Seller and Julio Núñez, from the Dénia Hospital and the Valencia Clinic, respectively, focuses on those patients with Heart Failure –HI- with preserved ejection fraction - LVEF-, an alteration of relaxation myocardial.
The study shows that in patients of this subtype, who undergo a stress test in which chronotropic incompetence is demonstrated (that is, an inability to increase the heart rate with exertion), the withdrawal of medication with beta-blockers produce an improvement in functional capacity and quality of life; since, according to Dr. Seller, “many patients no longer present chronotropic incompetence; and this is related to a better ability to make an effort "One of the most outstanding characteristics of the research, adds Dr. Seller, is that for the first time, less is more in the treatment of HF with preserved LVEF.
It should be remembered, emphasizes the cardiologist at the Hospital de Dénia that, "today, there is no treatment available that improves either the prognosis or survival of these patients, who are usually treated with beta-blockers", the same as those of the subgroup with reduced ejection fraction.
The study, led by the Dianense center and the University Clinic of Valencia, may have great clinical applicability in our usual practice. According to the authors of the presentation, the next step would be to carry out physiological stimulation monitored with devices similar to pacemakers in this type of patient.
