The Department of Health of Dénia launches teleophthalmology

21 December 2020 - 16: 04

The Dénia Health Department has launched a telemedicine program for eye care. The program has started at the Calp Integrated Health Center and will be extended to other health centers in the Marina Alta.

It is a revision examination that is performed using photographs of the fundus and that allows the specialist to observe the retina and adjacent structures. The photographs, kept in the patient's Medical Record, will be reviewed by the specialist doctor who, in the event of an eye condition, will summon the patient in consultation.

The program facilitates the control of the fundus and allows a screening of the healthy population. Through these reviews, the specialist will be able to detect alterations even before the patient has symptoms, thus avoiding future complications.

Diabetes patients will be the first to benefit from the program. Due to their pathology, they require an annual eye control to detect and treat a possible diabetic retinopathy early, before there is loss of vision.

For Dr. Scalerandi, Head of the Ophthalmology Service: “Early diagnosis through teleophthalmology will allow us to have greater ophthalmological control of the population of the Marina Alta. Assistance through telemedicine facilitates access for residents of the municipalities furthest from Dénia. "
