A doctor from Gata de Gorgos develops the first free APP to detect arrhythmias

February 20 from 2018 - 13: 28

Up to this point, heart problems with extrasystoles, bradycardias and tachycardias were monitored through very expensive and complex devices, such as holters.

Doctor Carlos Mulet, who currently works at the CS de Gata de Gorgos, has developed, during the last three years, the first mobile application that, through an optical heart rate monitor for sports use, is capable of detecting atrial fibrillation.

This application allows to control the heart rate the 24 hours of the day with only a heart rate monitor, connected via bluethooth to the mobile. The application, Dr. Mulet emphasizes, "When it detects an abnormality in the heart rate, it sends a real-time warning to the person in charge of the control or monitoring of the patient; in addition to a geolocation signal".

It is estimated that in Spain more than one million people have atrial fibrillation, of which more than 90.000 are undiagnosed. According to Dr. Mulet, "Ischemic stroke is a very disabling pathology and that, once recovery is instituted, it is very insidious and complicated. In addition, treatment represents an important economic expense for the health system.".

Application Arrhytmial, which is part of the doctoral thesis of the Gata de Gorgos physician, has been developed together with clinical studies in 350 patients and is associated with a very complex algorithm. The Universitat de Valéncia, the Jaume I of Castellón and the Polytechnic of Valencia have collaborated in its implementation.
