They denounce the presence of pellets on the beaches of Dénia due to an alleged container that fell into the Mediterranean

January 12 from 2024 - 09: 55

In recent months, a persistent accumulation of garbage has been observed in the beaches from Dénia, including cigarette butts, plastics and, notably, pellets. This last material, also known as 'mermaid tears', has been spread all over the sand on the coasts of Dénia and Xàbia, generating an environmental alert, as reported by the Dénia Sustainable Culture association to the media.

According to the association, these pellets, small plastic particles that absorb toxins, would come from ship containers that fell into the Mediterranean years ago. Although they have been present for a long time, their presence has only recently become aware after what happened in northern Spain. The accumulation intensifies during storm surges and has been carried away by sea currents.

Since pellets are toxic material and their permanence in nature increases their environmental risk, individual efforts to collect them are exhausting. The situation demands more coordinated and effective action by local authorities.

The suggestion of using appropriate machinery with large sieves on beaches to clean sand is supported by concerned residents. In addition, the implementation of innovative solutions is proposed, such as the one developed by Dutch inventor Boyan Slat, which uses finer nets to capture small pellets in the sea.

The pellets adhere to posidonia, a marine plant crucial to the ecosystem, along with cigarette butts and other toxic waste. In view of the posidonia treatment projects by the council, a call is made to include the removal of this toxic material in its plans.

In a gesture of solidarity with Galicia, immediate help is requested to acquire straining machines necessary to clean the beaches of this pollution. The pellets have become embedded under the sand, making the use of machinery essential.

Pellets converted into protest art

The call to action is also manifested through ecological art, with sand figures representing 'mermaid tears'. The drawings, designed to raise awareness in society about this problem, include representations of politicians without tears in their eyes made of pellets. A modest, but impactful expression of the urgency of greater involvement by the Spanish authorities to preserve the country's natural wealth.

Thank goodness there will be no elections here and therefore neither Sánchez, Doña Yolanda nor the transportation "wizard" Mr. Oscar Puente will come to collect the pellets.

Oh! Now those of Dénia realize
Taking advantage of opportunities. They put their hands on their heads because of Galicia, and it turns out that we already had them here and nothing was happening.
