From the heart of regional journalism to one more bank branch: the center evolves

03 March 2021 - 09: 48

It seems a lie but Dénia continues to change at a dizzying rate. Every so often, if we look back, the landscape of the city becomes unrecognizable compared to the one we currently live in, despite the fact that this evolution may go unnoticed.

We constantly remember places that have always been with us and that now turn into very different businesses. Some are even eradicated, torn down and forgotten. The streets are also transformed, since the street has little to do with the one of 20 years ago. But, at the end of the day, they are changes according to new customs and needs.

However, it seems that the center has long resisted taking the leap and evolving. Soon we will see the new Valgamediós and Tenor Cortis squares, and we can now stroll through the renovated Major street, but Marqués de Campo and Glorieta of the Valencià Country seem to remain unchanged. At least in terms of aesthetics.

But the days are numbered.

La Glorieta has undergone a series of changes and elements that we believed to be eternal have disappeared from it, such as kiosks. In addition, the project will soon be announced to renew the distribution and, surely, aesthetics of a square that is still "from another era".

A place witnessing multiple changes around it, being the heart of the city in every way, which is why it was chosen to host great events in our history.

In their environment everything seems the same, but the changes occur. One of the emblematic buildings in its surroundings housed La Casa del Arrós, a gastronomic reference in Dénia at the time when the sector was least promoted. And this, in turn, was the scene of the unforgettable Tertulia de l'Arrós organized by Radio Dénia, where the main faces of journalism, politics and the local business community met to discuss the closest news.

A successful format that began its journey in the mid-90s and persisted for years, giving more prestige to the building where it was recorded and the Glorieta where each of those who participated there passed. A memory of the past which is in danger, because now those spaces that welcomed it will also remain in that: memories. La Glorieta will soon change, but before that the building that was the headquarters of the well-known gatherings is already doing it, embraced these days by construction containers.

Its entrails are being emptied to leave only the skeleton, and what was once one of the most important headquarters of regional journalism will become yet another bank branch.
