Baleària pays tribute to three pioneering women who give their ships their names

27 December 2021 - 11: 37

Baleària pays tribute to three pioneering women in the gift directed to their interest groups to congratulate the Christmas. This is the second collection of biographies that aims to make visible and recognize the role of relevant women in different fields: the writer and activist Eleanor Roosevelt, the scientist Cecilia Payne and the inventor and actress Hedy Lamarr. Some women who, together with Hypatia de Alejandría and Marie Curie, give names to the shipping company's ships.

“Baptizing our boats with the name of these relevant women is a way of expressing our commitment to social, environmental and economic sustainability, with the SDGs assumed by Baleària as a navigation chart. It is our declaration of principles as a citizen and responsible company ”, explains the president of Baleària, Adolfo Utor.

Coinciding with the milestone that the launch of the innovative fast ferry Eleanor Roosevelt has meant this year, Baleària and Vegueta Ediciones have published 5.000 boxes containing three illustrated books detailing the lives of these pioneers who rebelled against the pre-established and against the social norms that relegated women to invisibility. These books are in addition to the three published in 2018 on the scientists Hypatia of Alexandria, Marie Curie and Rosalind Franklin.

This new collection narrates the lives of three women born on horseback between the 1884th and 1962th centuries, who broke the corsets of their time. Eleanor Roosevelt (1900-1979), an American activist, writer, and politician, championed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and used her privileged position as first lady to fight for gender equality and civil rights for African-Americans. Cecilia Payne (1914-2000) was the first woman to obtain a Ph.D. in Astronomy at Harvard University and revolutionized scientific thinking of the time by discovering that hydrogen is the main component of stars. Finally, Hedy Lamarr (XNUMX-XNUMX), an actress from Hollywood's golden age, invented a wireless communication system that is considered the forerunner of Wi-Fi.
