Baleària turns 85.000 plastic bottles into its new furniture

28 July 2020 - 14: 30

Baleària It has reused the plastic equivalent to more than 85.000 bottles to build the furniture for the terraces of the Bahama Mama ships, which covers the Dénia-Ibiza-Palma line, and Abel Matutes, which travels daily between Barcelona, Alcúdia and Ciutadella. It is a circular economy project based on the recycling of plastic containers to turn them into furniture for the exterior decks of ships.

It is an action more in line with the company's commitment to sustainability. Baleària, in collaboration with Ecoembes and Reciclamás, is responsible for separating and collecting plastic containers generated on board various ships and maritime stations, and the specialized company CmPlastik uses a quantity of recycled plastic equivalent to that collected to manufacture the furniture. It should also be noted that this material is more solid and resistant than that usually used in the exterior furniture of ships, which is expected to last longer.

Georges Bassoul, Managing Director of Business Baleària, explains: "We are going to extend this circular economy initiative to other ships of the company because we believe it is necessary to bet on sustainability".

In addition to this initiative, it should be remembered that Baleària has already incorporated the single-use biodegradable kitchenware throughout the fleet. The plates, cutlery and glasses that are used in the cafeterias and restaurants of the boats are not plastic, thus avoiding contamination in the sea. They are made from recycled cellulose cardboard, without chemical bleaching and that comes from controlled forests, or polyacid thermoplastic (PLA) from vegetable starches. Added to this is the elimination of plastic bottles on the Ibiza-Formentera route, which have been replaced by bricks from the Agua EnCaja Mejor brand, produced with cardboard fiber, from sustainably managed forests.

Beyond the previous actions, Baleària completes its commitment to sustainability with the use of natural gas as fuel for its ships. The shipping company currently has five sailing ferries powered by this energy source that reduces CO2 emissions by 35%, NoX emissions by 85% and eliminates sulfur and particulate emissions.
