19 October 2017 - 15: 00

Every October 19, World Day against Breast Cancer is celebrated, a disease that affects the Marina Alta to 100 of every 100.000 inhabitants. This is a high figure, taking into account that the national average for the same population is 48.

The Department of Health of Dénia detects every year 150 new cases of breast cancer. However, the survival rate is also higher than the national average, thanks to the prevention and early diagnosis programs launched by the Conselleria de Sanitat Universal i Salut Pública.

The treatment of breast cancer is also a priority for the Department of Health of Denia; so that there are specialized teams that work exclusively in this pathology that include a Committee of tumors, formed by a complete multidisciplinary team; a surgical team formed by 2 plastic surgeons, incorporated into the general surgery team, which deal with the aesthetic aspects of the patient, through Oncoplastic Surgery, as the immediate reconstructions of the breast.

In addition, the Department of Health of Denia is one of the most recognized in the study of sentinel node in patients with breast cancer. In this way axillary dissection is avoided, in all cases that is feasible, which considerably reduces long-term morbidity.

Remember that the Hospital de Dénia also has a Radiology Service with specialized personnel dedicated exclusively to the diagnosis of breast cancer. It also has the most advanced technology; so it is one of the departments that most often uses MRI, Magnetic Resonance for diagnosis, allowing specialists to work with high precision and high quality standards.

In Biological Diagnostics, professionals of Pathology have a subspecialized group in the diagnosis of breast cancer. The Denia Hospital has a Molecular Oncology Laboratory that has a genetic sequencer that allows the processing of oncological samples to determine the genetic profile of each tumor.

And thanks to the collaboration with the AECC, the Oncology Service has the help of a psycho-oncologist, both for patients and their families. The Association also offers escort service, thanks to hospital volunteering.
