Six months after the closing date of the Baix la Mar reading agency due to the health crisis, the Governing Board has approved the change of location of the service in the House of Culture and that it is renamed Rafael reading agency Chirbes, in homage to the writer, closely linked in the city of Dénia throughout his life.

The Baix la Mar reading agency shared facilities, until its closure by COVID, with the Urban Planning area, in one of the municipal buildings in Ronda de las Murallas. The current needs of the Department of Urbanism mean that the space occupied until now by the agency is needed for new uses, and the works to adapt the building where it was located will begin shortly.

In addition, the opening of the Municipal Public Library on Carrer de Sant Josep has considerably shortened the distance of the service to the Baix la Mar neighborhood, which can be accessed in a few minutes by crossing the castle tunnel.

These two circumstances have prompted the Department of Culture to carry out a change in the location of the reading agency "Which will substantially improve the conditions of service", as indicated by the councilor, Raúl García de la Reina.

The new agency will be located on the second floor of the House of Culture, where the public library used to be, and will have a space on the ground floor for the children's section. With the move, the agency gains in capacity, incorporates an independent children's section and serves the population of a very populous area. By complying with the requirements established by the regional law regarding reading agencies, Dénia may continue to be part of the Network of Public Libraries of the Valencian Community.

As for the denomination of the service, until now it was marked by the neighborhood where it was located, but with the opportunity that the change gives, the municipal government has wanted to take advantage of it to honor the figure of the Valencian critic and writer, closely related to our city and Therefore, it has agreed that the new reading agency be called Rafael Chirbes.

The Rafael Chirbes Foundation is aware of it and, in gratitude, will make a donation of the author's material because it is available to the public on the shelves of the new reading agency that bears his name.
