A plaque will remember the 14 killed in the worst bombing of Dénia during the Civil War

Fourteen people - twelve soldiers, one father and one son - were killed in the 18 October 1938 in the worst bombing that fell on Dénia during the Civil War. It was on La Vía street, and now, when 80 years of one of the darkest episodes of our recent history are fulfilled, this painful event will be visualized and remembered forever.

The next 18 of October, the same day in which 80 years before the bombs destroyed those fourteen lives, a plaque will remember the events that stained the city with blood. It will be in a simple act framed in the programming of a new cycle organized by the Municipal Archive.

Fem memòria. Dénia, guerra i repressió wants to commemorate that stage through a series of lectures, guided tours of the spaces of war and repression, two exhibitions, the edition and presentation of two books on the Civil War in Dénia and didactic dissemination activities aimed at Secondary Education students.

Lecture series

The municipal archivist, Rosa Seser, has cracked the details of the programming, which starts the 20 September with conferences, designed so that attendees can know chronologically what the Civil War in the city.

The cycle of conferences starts on September 20, with a lecture by the Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Alicante, José Miguel Santacreu Soler titled "Let's talk about historical memory", which will center and contextualize the cycle. Antonio Calzado Aldaria, from the University of Valencia, will offer the October 5 The conference "Live the war in the rear". He October 19, researcher Miguel Salvador Puchol will talk about the bombing in Dénia during the Civil War.

The cycle continues on November 15th with the conference "War defenses on the coast of the Marina Alta" of the architect Andrés Martínez Medina, professor at the University of Alicante and will finish the 22 in November with the presentation "Dénia, post-war repression center. Visicitudes of the defeated" offered by Francisco Moreno Sáez, member of the supervisory group of the Arxiu de la Democràcia of the Universitat d'Alacant ..
 
The conferences will be held at the House of Culture of Dénia, at 20 hours.

Guided tours

The Municipal Archive has also organized two free visits to spaces of war and repression, guided by the historian Jaume Sau with the collaboration of Rosa Seser. Exhibitions at the Center d'Art l'Estació

From the 26 of October to the 2 of December, they will be exhibited in the Center d'Art L'Estacio the exhibitions "Dénia, time of war and repression, 1936-1939" y "Architectures for the defense of the Mediterranean coast (1936-1939)".


 
The Municipal Archive has raised the exhibition "Dénia, time of war and repression, 1936-1939" in two branches, one dedicated to the dianenses that went to the front and another on how the war was lived in Dénia from the rear, with articles and material collected in the Archive over the years, "which is what brings us closer to the people who lived at that time", Seser added. Among this material, you can read transcripts from the interviews that Pep Bertomeu made for the Archive between 2006 and 2007 to the protagonists of that war and postwar, grouped by themes.
 
The exhibition on the architectures for the defense of the coast, mounted with the collaboration of the University of Alicante, will be displayed simultaneously in another of the rooms of the Station Art Center.

Edition of two books

The project "Fem memòria. Dénia, guerra i repressió" is completed with the edition of the books Història i memòria, The Civil War in Dénia, coordinated by Rosa Seser and edited by the City Council of Dénia, and Brigadistes Les Brigades Internacionals i el seu servei sanitari to Benissa i Dénia, 1936-1939, a work by Robert Llopis Sendra coedited by the City Council of Dénia and Publications University of Valencia. Both works will be presented in the coming months.

Actions to achieve "a better democratic coexistence"

The mayor of the city, Vicent Grimalt, Noted that "We understand that forgetting or looking the other way is not the way to achieve a plural, tolerant and democratic country and, in this line, we wish that with these cultural actions we will reach a better knowledge in favor of a better democratic coexistence".

In the same line the councilor of culture has expressed himself, Rafa Carrió, which has stressed that it is intended "To follow the spirit of the Law of Democratic Memory and for the coexistence of the Valencian Community, with the intention of reaching all sectors of society and because our ancestors deserve to be reminded of such acts".
