On October 1, the book 'El somni americà contra el caciquisme i la fil·loxera' by journalist Juli Esteve will be presented at the Dénia House of Culture at 19.30:XNUMX p.m. That same day this book on Valencian emigration to the United States and Canada will also go on sale.

The American Dream Against Caciquismo and Phylloxera is a 352-page essay that InfoTV has edited and puts an end to the investigative work that served, in the first instance, to produce the four documentaries in the series Del Montgó in Manhattan. Valencians in New York. In addition to the author, the act will intervene Rosa Seser, president of the Institute of Regional Studies of the Marina Alta.

The book collects all the information obtained in that investigation, both that already known by audiovisuals, as well as much more that was unpublished and that is now made available to researchers and those interested in the history and memory of the XNUMXth century. The text is complemented by the presence of nearly two hundred photographs from the emigrants' family archives.

The research, carried out between 2012 and 2015, had two very different stages. The first took about fifteen months and consisted of a meticulous review of the passenger lists of all the ships that arrived at the North American Atlantic ports from Spain, France and Cuba between 1900 and 1920. that allowed to identify all the Valencian emigrants. The consultation was able to be so exhaustive thanks to the digitization of the Immigration files of the United States and Canada, accessible through the Internet.

The information obtained, which is now being published for the first time, made it possible to quantify 15.758 entries from Valencians, detected by name and surname. But it also included other essential data to analyze the phenomenon, such as age, gender, marital status, profession, municipality of origin, destination city, money available on arrival, anticipated length of stay and previous trips, among others.

The knowledge of the towns where they lived then made possible, and for two more years, a very wide field work, consisting of interviewing about 700 descendants of those who had emigrated in some seventy Valencian municipalities and in several cities in the United States. Thanks to this, The book not only perfectly defines Valencian emigration in North America but also provides detailed and definitive information on the reasons for emigration, the mechanisms of extension of the phenomenon, the financing of the passage, the reasons for leaving, the cities where the Valencians lived, the jobs they did and how they lived, the reasons they had to return and the life that those who came had here and there the that they stayed.

The comprehensiveness of the work It has also made it possible to locate a large number of unique stories, like those of Valencian Americans who fought in World War II or the executive who survived the attack on the Twin Towers, among many others that are very interesting.

The main conclusion already appears in the title: the abuses of the caciques and the gentlemen and the ruin that phylloxera caused to the Valencian dry land were the main reasons for that great emigration in North America and to other destinations such as Algeria, Cuba or Argentina. A justified conclusion with irrefutable data and priceless witnesses.

The book can be found from October 1 in the most important bookstores and can also be purchased on the website www.infotelevisio.com.
