Podem Dénia announces that it will recover the bonfires of Sant Joan if they enter the government

November 16 from 2022 - 09: 10

The candidate of Podem to the Mayor of Dénia, Juanjo Nieves, has announced that his formation will revoke the ban on making bonfires on the beach Nit de Joan Center if they enter the municipal government. According to the purple formation, "this prohibition was established by PSPV y Compromís this legislature by approving the ordinance for the use of beaches».

For Nieves, the City Council has shown these four years a contradictory policy regarding the protection of the beaches. On the one hand, “it has legalized concrete blocks like the one at the Las Olas complex on Blay Beach, just 8 meters from the shore when there is no storm, while it prevents working people and young people from enjoying a historical, cultural and affective tradition such as the fires of Sant Joan on June 23».

For the Podemos candidate, this double yardstick is a "covert privatization" of the beaches. In other words, on the one hand "families and groups of young people are prevented from lighting a bonfire and on the other, a luxurious 4-story cement building is allowed to be erected on the same beach."

"One of the essential factors to reverse the deterioration of the coast and reduce the impact of climate change, according to all the studies, is not to prohibit bonfires, but to prevent more new buildings from being built in the coastal protection zone established by the Coastal Law”, explained Nieves. For this, Podemos Dénia will propose a moratorium on the front line
of coast in the new General Plan.

The local spokesperson for Podemos and number 2 on the list for the next municipal elections, Cristina Molinillo, for her part, recalled the actions of the government team at the beginning of the legislature in the dunes of Raset beach, which were "razed". by a backhoe, uprooting trees, bushes, seabird nests and all the biodiversity that this coastal area harbored. The spokeswoman stated that "normal people show more respect for the beaches when they celebrate the bonfires of Sant Joan, than the absolute majority of the government team has shown these 4 years."

For this reason, it has advocated that the sections of beaches that have some risk be delimited by the technicians to protect them that night, but that the necessary security measures be established in the rest of the beaches that allow the enjoyment of the bonfires by society, as is done in other progressive municipalities such as Valencia or Barcelona.
