They fish 6.000 kg of plastic that "goes to the Municipal Market"

November 19 from 2019 - 12: 43

The first edition of the D * na Gastronomic Forum, which will be held at the CdT of Dénia on 25, 26 and 27 November, comes with the intention of reflecting and discussing gastronomy, territory and sustainability. To talk about the latter, the organization has put on the table, through an awareness campaign, the increasingly alarming amount of single-use plastics that end up at sea.

The data is not for less: in 2018, the trawlers of the Brotherhood of Fishermen of Dénia A total of 6.000 kilos of plastic were rescued from the sea while they worked throughout the year. A fact that thickens the total of 69.040 kilos extracted from the Mediterranean throughout the Valencian Community.

"In order to make this serious problem visible to society, the fishermen of Dénia gave the found plastic the same treatment as their daily product catches. Upon arrival at the port, they paraded through the fish market ribbon to be auctioned, to the surprise of thrusters and visitors. One day later, plastic followed the usual path of fish, and went to the Mercat de Dénia, where it was exhibited in one of its fishmongers as one more sale, with the consequent astonishment of the usual buyers."

This story, which is pure fiction, has been reflected in the video Plastic Fresquet to value the work of the Fishermen's Association of Dénia in the protection of our seabed and, therefore, the quality of the pieces that reach the consumer day after day. In order to bet on the future of the planet, through the Ecoalf and Ecoembes Foundation, the collected plastic becomes part of the Upcycling the Oceans project, which transforms waste extracted from the sea into top quality yarn that will be used to make clothes.

The environmental issue will also address the Tuesday November 26 at the round table Fishing: a renewable resource in which formulas responsible for exploitation of the sea will be analyzed. After the presentation by Joan Baptista Company, Doctor in Biology and Researcher of the Institute of Marine Sciences (Superior Council of Scientific Research, CSIC), the biologist Miguel Ángel Civera Meléndez will moderate the Experiences Table composed by José Antonio Sepulcre, President of the Brotherhood Fishermen of Dénia; Jose Manuel Miguel, from the Beat Restaurant (Calp); Mariluz Piera, representing El Pegolí (Dénia) and Àgueda Vitòria, Fishing Tourism Guide.
