New investments in the Castle of Dénia: the Verger Alt and the Baluard Oriental will be rehabilitated

Just a few weeks after the inauguration of an emblematic performance in the castle of Dénia, the restoration of the stairs of the Palau del Governador, new investments are announced for the main monument of the city.

The General Director of Local Administration of the Generalitat Valenciana, Antoni Such, announced this Tuesday in Dénia the rehabilitation of the Verger Alt and the Eastern Baluard, two areas in which it has not been worked and which is expected to find important historical findings.

The municipal archaeologist, Josep Antoni Gisbert, explained that currently the Verger Alt, located in the eastern part of the castle, is an area of margins and terraces, impassable roads and with a tree mass of 22 pines in its interior.

The rehabilitation project contemplates the deforestation and elimination of a large part of the vegetation cover of the area, the elimination of practically half of the margins and terraces and archaeological excavations, which in some points will reach 5 depth meters, "and that they will give us a stratigraphic sequence of what the Verger Alt has been in time and perhaps trace us back to the time of the Phoenician and Greek colonizations".

Likewise, the eastern bastion of the Verger Alt will be rehabilitated, recovering the key elements in the functioning of this defensive architecture from the Renaissance period (XVI and XVII centuries), such as the access ramp and the iron portal that closed the enclosure and that will be install. In the terraces of culture the surface will be unified to place panels explaining the Renaissance architecture in the castle of Dénia.

This will create a new space in the castle, the Espai Baluard, bounded and closed, with opening hours and visits of its own. It is projected, Gisbert has indicated, that the public that wants to visit this space pays a special rate "which will be used to cover the maintenance and surveillance of the area".

Budget and deadlines of the works

The improvement works at the Dénia Castle will cost 375.885 euros, excluding VAT. The Generalitat Valenciana, through the Operational Program FEDER of the Valencian Region 2014-2020, will finance the 50% of this amount and the municipality will cover the rest with funds from the 2017 Treasury remnant.

The works, Gisbert has advanced, are scheduled to start in the fall of this year and end in the spring or summer of 2019.
