The origin of the act
La Towers encesa It began in 2016 as a historical recreation to reconnect the old defence towers surrounding Mallorca, inspired by the signalling system devised by mathematician Joan Baptista Binimelis. This system allowed visual communication between towers in the event of maritime attacks.
Initially, the reason for bringing back this event was to recreate history and to return the towers to their function of visual communication. Finally, in the face of the humanitarian drama of the migration by sea of so many people who have to flee their country, a solidarity-based approach has been taken, transforming the meaning of the defence signs into symbols of welcome and hope. Thus, the fires and smoke lit have been reinterpreted as lighthouses that guide those fleeing desperate situations to safe ports.
Dénia joins, once again, this celebration with the commitment to promote human rights.
