Museu de la Mar de Dénia: history, location and schedule

08 October 2021 - 08: 02

The Museu de la Mar is the most recent museum in Dénia. Hundreds of pieces from different centuries are exhibited in it, all of them related to fishing, the port and, ultimately, the Dianense sea. In fact, it is located in the same port of Dénia and access to its interior is completely free.

Next you have an index with all the points that we are going to deal with.

History

The Museu de la Mar was one of the projects most demanded by the Culture area of the consistory. With its rich fishing tradition, its strategic port and a history of battles and shipwrecks without equal, it was to be expected that Dénia would bet on taking a tour of what the sea has contributed to it for centuries by betting on a great exhibition.

In June 2019, the museum became a reality. The most emblematic cultural space in recent years was inaugurated in a restored fish market that went from selling seafood to telling stories of sailors.

What to see

It is a museum dedicated to the sea, inside which there are more than 400 pieces related to the maritime history of Dénia. These belong to different periods, ranging from the XNUMXth century BC to the recent XNUMXth century.

Exposed pieces

Most of the pieces come from donations made over the last decades, which were either kept in warehouses waiting to see the light or were part of the exhibitions of other museums in the city.

Virtual tour through history

In addition to the hundreds of pieces on display, at the Museu de la Mar you can find a room where you can take a tour of the maritime history of Dénia through audiovisual files projected on a screen. In this way, you can enjoy thematic exhibitions such as fishing, seafaring traditions, devotions, the progress of research in underwater archeology and a whole series of chapters of the blue mosaic of Dénia & Mar.

Where is

The location of the Museu de la Mar is almost one more element of the exhibition. The building that houses this huge sample is a key element to understand the maritime history of the city, especially related to the fishing trade. It is an old fish market where the fish caught every morning by the Dianense boats were sold and auctioned, which closed in 1997.

The building was left in disuse due to its poor condition, until in 2019 it reopened, showing a renewed face after long works to restore it and modernize its image.

Map

The museum is located in the port of Dénia, next to the Cervantes esplanade. An ideal location as it invites you to enjoy the history of Dianense fishing and sailing while watching the boats and water through the windows and the smell of the sea invades the place.

Schedule

The Museu de la Mar is open practically all year long. From Monday to Sunday it remains open, except for the days of Christmas (December 25) and New Years (January 1). Similarly, the afternoons of December 24 and 31 are usually closed.

Apart from these exceptions, the museum opens in two shifts: the morning shift, from 10 a.m. to 13 p.m., and the afternoon shift, from 16 p.m. to 20 p.m. This from October to April, since between May and September, the tourist season, the schedule is adapted, keeping the morning the same but delaying the opening and closing hours in the afternoons by one hour. Thus, between May and September the afternoons are open from 17:21 p.m. to XNUMX:XNUMX p.m.

Price

Like most museums and exhibition halls in the city, there is no price list in this one. The Museu de la Mar is completely free.

  1. Francesc Piera Martorell says:

A magnificent Museum, simple but intense and well exposed. Worthy of being a flirtatious European reference if it were not for the fact that the reviews of the pieces are written only in the Valencian language, which greatly impoverishes the enriching desire of the Museum. Come on, most of the people who visit it do not understand what is exposed.
A shame the narrow-mindedness of who made that decision. From "Universal" to "redneck". But rectifiable. Excuse the offended language.

    Francesc, also Soc Dianense.

  2. John kaufman says:

As a regular visitor to Denia, and apartment owner from the UK, I think this is one of Denia's great attractions.
It has a fabulous collection of model galleons, fishing boats etc, very interesting historical photographs and interesting relics recovered from the sea giving an insight into the long history of Denia.
An exhibition which is as good as anywhere and to be proud of.

  4. Antonio José says:

It is curious, but it is not a museum of the sea. It is from man-made things that have been found in the sea, which is not the same. I do not understand that there is nothing alive in that museum (aquariums) or information about what is alive in the sea. I do not know if it is due to ignorance or laziness, but both are negative. Dianenses, make you look at your laziness not ignorance of the sea.

    • An angry dianense says:

You have not understood our museum, which talks about the history of our coasts and the finds found in it.
As a local, I am very happy with our museum, in which historical pieces are exhibited.
A museum that is a source of pride for a small town like Denia.
You have not understood anything, dear Antonio Jose, I think you are the one who has to make him look at it.
