Dénia traps are effective: 72 wild boars are captured in the first 3 months

January 14 from 2025 - 11: 51

As announced by the Councillor for Ecological Transition, Sandra Gertrúdix, at the end of last summer, the Dénia City Council has hired a specialised company, Ibérica control y atrapas SL, to tackle the problem caused by the overpopulation of wild boar in the municipality.

Between October and December 2024, 72 specimens have been captured in the two trap cages located in Plana d'Elies and Magrana Street (Montgó area). All the captured animals have been analysed and no disease has been detected, so they have been suitable to enter the food chain.

In the Magrana street cage, 44 specimens were retained, 36 females and 8 males. The number was lower in the Plana d'Elies facility, with 18 females and 10 males captured.

To this day, the cages remain installed in these areas and the specialized company is studying the area of Marines, in the section between the ravines of Regatxo and L'Alberca, to find the best location to install a third trap cage.

The Councillor for the Environment has expressed her satisfaction with the results achieved during these first months and hopes that the initiative of the City Council, together with the control actions carried out by the Department of the Environment and the hunts carried out by hunters in the Montgó Natural Park, manage to solve the problem.

Regarding the natural park, according to reports from the Ministry, the density of the wild boar population has been reduced in the last two years, since sampling began, "which indicates that trapping and the actions of hunting clubs are giving good results, which have been reinforced by the cages installed by the city council," concludes Gertrúdix.

We could set up a factory making wild boar sausages with the Denia designation of origin, what do you think? Like with prawns, at 250 euros a kilo we'd be rich.

To clarify: The number of wild boars that were happily captured, and congratulations on that, is 72.
