The collection of waste and urban cleaning to tender for 68 million euros

01 2021 April - 13: 55

The new specifications to tender the Dénia waste collection and urban cleaning service has passed this morning by an informative commission and, next week, on April 8, approval is scheduled in an extraordinary plenary session. Once this procedure is passed, the new contract will be put out to tender, which amounts to an initial budget of € 68.228.848 for 10 years.

As highlighted by the mayor, Vicent Grimalt, "This new contract wants to resolve the deficiencies that the previous concession, of 16 years ago, drags, and modernize and adapt the service to new needs".

In this sense, the Councilor for Ecological Transition, Maite Pérez, has listed the main changes and improvements introduced by the new statement. Among them, the introduction of the fifth container, brown in color, for the selective collection of organic matter stands out. Of course, the mayor has qualified, "at first these containers will have a restricted use for people who understand the use and commit", since we want to guarantee that the waste that is dealt with is only organic.

The new contract will also involve the replacement of all containers, which will have to be larger and also accessible. They will also have smart sensors that will inform the company when they are 80% full to plan the emptying "by necessity and not by route, as is done now".

Another improvement, "To reduce the presence and impact of containers in certain special places", is the recovery of the traditional formula for collecting garbage bags at the door, in neighborhoods such as Baix la Mar and les Roques and also in La Xara and Jesús Pobre.

Other points that the contract insists on are increasing cleaning ('flushing') in new areas; the removal of garbage in ravines; cleaning of herbs on sidewalks, both in the urban area and the suburbs; and the removal of asbestos.

As a novelty, also, the contract will be reviewed and updated, if necessary, every two years to adapt it to new needs.

Paco Roselló, Councilor for the Treasury, has explained that, taking into account the various administrative procedures, the concessionaire company of the new contract could start working in Dénia in September, with a period of 6 months to start up the provision of the service at 100% ( with machinery and all improvements committed).
For the summer, Maite Pérez has pointed out, “Yes, we have already made a forecast of needs to improve, with current resources, the cleaning service in the high season. The new contract will include an adaptation of cleaning tasks to seasonal needs, divided into three categories: low season, high season and extra high season.

Finally, the mayor has taken advantage of the presentation of the new cleaning service specifications to insist on the need for citizens to get involved. "It is not cleaner who cleanses the cleanest, but whoever dirties the least, and the complicity of the neighborhood is essential for the improvement to be noticed and consolidated". "No matter how much we invest, if we are not responsible, we will continue to have problems, such as, for example, that uncivil behavior represents an additional cost of 200.000 euros per year".
