"The pandemic is helping us discover boating out of season"

10 December 2020 - 07: 00

Alex Pella is one of the best ocean sailors of his generation. An excellent sailor with more than 300.000 miles sailed through all the oceans of the planet; that put in a straight line would be more than 10 times around the world. He has sailed in all kinds of boats and regattas. His experience is such that the French production company Gaumont Films hired him as a skipper on the set of the film In Solitaire by François Cluzet.

Currently, he holds the absolute speed record around the world under sail, the Jules Verne Trophy, the fastest circumnavigation of the planet in history, in 40 days. It has other important records such as Hong Kong - London among others.

He was the first and only Spaniard to win a solo ocean regatta, the Ruta del Ron. An ocean liner between Saint Malo and the island of Guadeloupe. He has also won important two-way races such as the Transat Jacques Vabre among others.

Marina de Denia He has contacted Alex Pella to see what this strange year means and how it has affected us all in some way. Regattas, events, competitions, everything was truncated on March 14 with the decree of the state of alarm.

“Yes, it is being a different year. I have been able to resume some projects that I had in mind and that due to the pace of regattas in recent years I have been leaving them parked. The break of the first months was very good for me; since I just became a father for the second time and I am enjoying my family in Dénia. We are installed in Dénia and here I have my base to work in what I like the most, nautical. Now it's time to reinvent yourself and look for new opportunities and nautical has them. The pandemic is helping us discover boating out of season ".

"We are fortunate to have many kilometers of coastline and incredible weather that is allowing us to do water sports after the summer season. Unfortunately, not all sports activities have this facility. The seasonal adjustment is here to stay and here we have the future of our nautical tourism ".

Next season 2021

A few weeks ago, Alex Pella arrived in Dénia aboard the trimaran of the owner Oren Nataf. “Oren wants to do the Ruta del Ron in 2022 and wants me to help him with this project. In 2021 we will participate in the RORC Transatlantic Race, from Lanzarote to the island of Granada (Caribbean), in the RORC Caribbean 600 and another crossing from the Atlantic back to the Mediterranean.

I collaborate with several teams of oceanic mutlicascos, a few days ago I was sailing in Valencia aboard the 50'ft trimaran LEYTON (Ex ARKEMA) with which I won the Transat Jacques Vabre 2017.

With my boat, the "Galvana" we will participate in classic regattas and some high altitude regatta with the calendar yet to be defined.

I also anticipate that I will continue to be linked to the great trimarans of the “Ultim” class. Next year's season is yet to be defined, but the idea is to do an Atlantic loop or a crewed round the world tour by the end of 2021. "
