The Department of Sexual Equality and Diversity launches a campaign to encourage the choice of non-sexist toys in Christmas shopping

10 December 2020 - 11: 06

The Department of Equality and Sexual Diversity of the City Council of Dénia has launched this week the campaign "This Christmas break stereotypes ”to promote the purchase and use of non-sexist toys during this time of year.

According to a report prepared by the Institute for Women, 40% of toy ads are sexist and 34% of ads that refer to a professional occupation link girls with hairdressing and aesthetics. "We must act in this regard and, therefore, this Christmas from the council we want to send a clear message: no toy is exclusive for boys or girls, but toys are to play with total freedom, so that children choose the ones you like the most, out of sexist stereotypes, thus encouraging them to be what they want to be tomorrow ”, says the councilor Javier Scotto.

The campaign will be developed with poster material in the advertising media that the city council has distributed throughout the city and also on social networks, where five informative videos will be disseminated, which will be launched every week until January 6, 2021. This Audiovisual material constitutes a tool for citizens to identify what sexist toys are and how to choose and buy toys that have an educational and playful nature, without their choice depending on gender and role stereotypes.

In another episode, fun traditional games are remembered and recommended, which stimulate creativity, physical exercise and dexterity, among other advantages, such as hopscotch or sambori, marbles, hide and seek or rope.

Likewise, a chapter is dedicated to current games and toys that promote egalitarian values and move away from sexist stereotypes, such as strategy games, board games, legos, cooking games and housework or games that teach computer programming.

Finally, a manual activity is proposed to be carried out with the boys and girls that consists of creating a catalog of non-sexist toys.
