Europe agrees to expand research on the dumping of waste from MontePego to La Marjal

11 October 2018 - 09: 59

The European Parliament has agreed to expand the research on the pollution that was pouring, for years, from the treatment plant of Monte Pego to the Marjal de Pego-Oliva Natural Park. Last Monday, the affected neighbors exhibited in Brussels the situation with the support of Esquerra Unida.

Finally, the European Parliament admitted the neighborhood request that warns about the risk to the Pego-Oliva Marjal Natural Park, integrated into the European 2000 Natura Network, despite the contradictions that followed, according to denounce the Marina Albiol MEP. For Albiol, "The European Commission maintained a very confusing position on the problem, and even contradictory in indicating first that it had no record of irregularities or regulatory breaches, and then admitting that actions are being taken to solve the problems. It was an official response. which motivated that in the Petitions Committee it was decided to continue with the investigations, send communications in this regard to the administrations involved, and keep the procedure open ".

In response to this response from the European Commission, the local representatives pointed out some important points that had been ignored by the Commission, such as the fact that the sewage plant is not even connected to the network or the contamination found with its analyzes already within the protected area of the natural Park.

For the EUPV coordinator in the Marina AltaMaria Jose Gomez, "the neighbors of Montepego have done their homework, have dismantled the official version that there is no problem with facts and data, and have evidenced the Administration's inaction in the face of a risk that could affect flora, fauna and even the aquifers in the area, as well as rice production. It has become clear that there is a problem, and we are wondering what the City Council, Department and Hydrographic Confederation are waiting to address and solve it ".

The Esquerra Unida MEP finally underlines the fact that the European Commission has open sanctions procedures for deficiencies in the process of water purification, and about a thousand black spots detected throughout the State: "Despite this, there seems to be reluctance to frame the Montepego treatment plant within this long list of deficient treatment plants, although it affects a natural area that the European authorities themselves should preserve before it is too late. And once again, we will demand that those responsible for these deficiencies respond for their mistakes: we are not worth the penalties that end up being paid with public money ".

How sad to have to go to the European Commission for something like that. On the website of the City Council appears the greeting of its mayor, counting all the wonders that are in Pego, including the Natural Park that neither know nor want to take care of. What do you want us to visit your landfill? I do not know can be more miserable.
