The Dénia palace turned into its largest museum: the Casa de la Marquesa Valero de Palma opens the doors

25 December 2021 - 23: 45

Strolling through Dénia is to go through centuries of history that have marked the city, and whose footprint you can find in a thousand different ways when you turn the next corner. In some neighborhoods, great architectural samples that recall the era of economic splendor, for some, of the raisin trade, stand out in some neighborhoods. Of these buildings, without a doubt one of the most important is the Casa de la Marquesa Valero de Palma. A mansion that could be exhibited in any museum, but whose destiny is to be one by itself and house the largest collection to immerse yourself in the history of the city.

This imposing building on Carrer Cavallers is already known to many people from Diane. For years, in the 50s, it housed a clinic specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, where many families gave birth. And after its acquisition by the Dénia City Council in 1985, it was the headquarters of the Tenor Cortis music conservatory until the beginning of this century. But, before all that, it was a symbol of the power of the city's bourgeoisie during the XNUMXth and early XNUMXth centuries, when great fortunes were made with the export of raisins.

It is a neoclassical mansion from the first half of the XNUMXth century. Its imposing main façade does not go unnoticed, still showing a great state of conservation. Now, from the outside we already knew the house. The interesting thing is that it finally opens its doors to all residents and tourists to show its majestic and endless interior.

An immense interior to contemplate the fortunes of another era

When crossing its gate, we find a huge space distributed over three main floors, to which is added a vaulted basement that housed the winery and an attic with unique views of the dome of the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.

The current state of the interior is impeccable, completely renovated and modernized in some aspects. In addition, work has been done to eliminate architectural barriers by adapting its staggered distribution to be able to be traveled by people with reduced mobility.

But, luckily, among its many rooms, elements are discovered that have remained faithful to their origins, where time does not seem to have passed. We can find from a stone fireplace carved with Romanesque motifs to semi-buried wine jars and now uncovered in the cellar. There is also no lack of architectural elements such as elegant exposed beams, ceilings from another era decorated with care (even some reed) and a variety of hydraulic floors.

The future of the Casa de la Marquesa

However, for the moment the echo reigns in that palace, since the rooms remain empty except for a room where the projects that participated in the project are exhibited these days. competition to occupy the plot of Marqués de Campo.

The Casa de la Marquesa is called to be the largest museum that Dénia has ever had, with a capacity similar to the totality of the rest of the city's museum offer together. The subject is somewhat ambiguous, since we are talking about a Museum of History of the City of Dénia that will be inaugurated in a municipality with other museums that already cover relevant historical sections, such as the Archaeological, Ethnological or the Museum of the Sea. But, Either way, it will have the ideal setting to make visitors feel as if they were living in another century.
