El Montgó becomes 'the graner of the Navy' again thanks to the cultivation of wheat

15 June 2018 - 00: 03

Traditional agriculture is settling again in the Montgo. The Associació Mercat del riurau, under the umbrella of Dénia Action Plan&Marina Alta #TastingLife, launched two years ago the recovery of wheat cultivation in the lower Montgó, a project that this Saturday will live one of the most important moments of the year.

And this Saturday, good morning, will begin to reap the wheat in lands that, decades ago, were the granary of the region.

Muscat wheat and vineyards were the essence of the agricultural landscape of the Marina Alta and have left an architectural legacy that is still visible today. Part of the wheat that will be harvested, will be beaten and thrown at the Festa del Batre to be held in Riurau de Jesús Pobre next July 14. There the varieties that have been cultivated will be shown.

The Associació del Mercat del Riurau already produced a reduced wheat production last year, on an experimental basis, and with the project that is now underway, the objective of making its own flour over the next three years is set.

Thanks to this new action, seeds of the three traditional varieties of the region will be reproduced: Assolacambres, Rojal and Fartó. In addition, abandoned terraces will be used in this area that, paradoxically, are good soil and good soil. The cultivation of wheat will gain in diffusion and will help to boost the agricultural economy of the region and stimulate creativity in future gastronomic elaborations with the product, both with grain and with flour. As a last objective, they have set out to put into operation a workshop where they can prepare flour and serve to grind the entire region.

I think it's a fantastic initiative to take back the once cultivated lands and take advantage of them by giving them life. I hope and wish that the project works.
