The Ministry of Culture announces collaboration and aid to UNESCO's Creative Cities

The Ministry of Culture has collected the glove that the seven Spanish cities of the UNESCO network launched months ago and has announced that it will arbitrate formulas of collaboration and help to develop its national and international activity. The expected announcement took place this week in the framework of I Days of Creative Cities of Spain that have been celebrated in Granada (City of Literature). The meeting was attended Vicent Grimalt, Mayor of Dénia (City of Gastronomy), and the director of the Office of Innovation and Creativity, Floren Terrades, who presented the local project under the title of Recipe for sustainability.

The Ministry of Culture sent its director Pilar Torre to Granada, with the objective of publicly recognizing the role of cities in the projection of the Spanish cultural and creative sector in cultural forums of international prestige. In addition, from Culture it is understood that with its presence in the UNESCO network, the seven cities are promoting cultural tourism of excellence and contribute to creating a seal of quality for the exterior image of Spain. With these premises, the ministry is committed to include cities in their regular programs and open lines of specific aid. This responds to the demands that the cities raised last October at their first joint meeting with the heads of the Government of Spain.

At the meeting were present the seven cities that are part of some of the areas of the network of UNESCO Creative Cities: Bilbao (Design), Granada (Literature), Terrassa (Cinema), Barcelona (Literature), Seville (Music) and Burgos and Dénia (Gastronomy), who had the opportunity to share their respective projects linked to their membership of the network and present them to the cultural agents of Granada. In a meeting of a technical nature it was decided to hold these meetings on a rotating basis and on an annual basis.

The delegates of the cities discussed the possibility of undertaking joint projects, sharing them in the network and planning common promotion actions abroad. They also analyzed the possible incorporation of new Spanish cities to the network, after the announcement that this year has been launched by UNESCO for its expansion.

The conference was inaugurated by the mayor of Granada, Francisco Cuenca, the director of the UNESCO Office of Andalusia, Ángel Bañuelos, and the director of the Cervantes Institute, Luis García Montero. In addition to the representative of the Ministry of Culture, Pilar Torre, the Government also had a presence on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with Inés Manrique, attached to the AECID (Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development), on which the Spanish Commission of Cooperation with UNESCO.

The work sessions of this first state meeting of creative cities of UNESCO were held at the Federico García Lorca Center on Monday and Tuesday. During the conference, round tables and workshops were scheduled with the presence, among others, of the writer Andrés Neuman and the niece of the poet, writer and universal dramatist, Laura García-Lorca, president of the Lorca Foundation.
