May 13 from 2022 - 09: 30
  • More than 50% of transfusions in surgical interventions are avoidable
  • The decrease in unnecessary transfusions improves the postoperative period and reduces mortality

El Hospital de Dénia, has been awarded for its good practice and results in the Management of Patient Blood, in the seventh edition of the MAPBM Awards that were awarded yesterday in Madrid.

Dénia Hospital has received the award for the Spanish health center with the greatest annual increase in the MAPBM index and has been a finalist in the category of Hospital without Cardiac Surgery with the best results in the same index.

The MAPBM index is an evaluation model that allows the identification of transfusional variability by procedures in clinical practices that are carried out in transfusions.

Unnecessary or avoidable blood transfusion is common and has a significant impact on the patient's clinical course. For this reason, the World Health Organization (WHO) has been promoting since 2010 the development of multidisciplinary programs, known generically as Patient Blood Management, whose objective is to improve the patient's clinical evolution without transfusing more blood bags than are strictly necessary.

To achieve this, the MAPBM (Maturity Assessment Model in Patient Blood Management) Project has been underway in our country since 2014 with the aim of providing hospitals with tools and protocols to achieve this.

This week in Madrid the annual meeting of the Maturity Assessment Model in Patient Blood Management (MABPM) hospitals was held. During the meeting the MAPBM Awards were held. The event was attended by the directors and clinical leaders of the hospital centers participating in this evaluation model. All the Spanish hospitals currently participating in the project, around 50, have opted for the awards, including reference centers such as the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid or the Clinic and the Vall d'Ebrón Hospital in Barcelona.

The event was attended by the Director of Hospitalization, Dr. Patricia Martín Rico, and the specialist in Hematology and Hemotherapy, Dr. Ana Abad, also responsible for the Transfusion Service and clinical leader of the MAPBM Program at Dénia Hospital. For Dr. Abad “this award is a recognition of the multidisciplinary and coordinated work of medical, diagnostic and surgical services. This transversality has a direct impact on patient care in terms of improving her physiological conditions to face surgical interventions”.
