The Alicante field hospital receives the first patients with COVID-19

January 18 from 2021 - 09: 21

The Alicante field hospital, located on the premises of the General University Hospital of Alicante, has put into operation this Sunday the hospitalization of COVID-19 patients with mild or moderate clinical situation, in order to relieve the hospital pressure of the centers of acute care in the province, given the rebound in cases.

The Department of Universal Health and Public Health has announced this week the fitting out of 280 beds in the three field hospitals of the Valencian Community, of which a total of 80 correspond to the Alicante field hospital. This last endowment can be extended to 242 hours if necessary.

The Alicante field hospital, like its counterparts in Castellón and Valencia, will treat COVID-positive patients over 18 years of age, confirmed by PCR, who have previously been admitted to an acute care hospital and are in the resolution phase of the disease (if they have respiratory failure, this must be able to be corrected with low oxygen flows).

This infrastructure is divided into different hospitalization units, which have nursing controls and medical consultations, equipped with the necessary equipment to attend to sick people individually.

Likewise, taking into account the low temperatures that have been reached in recent days, the air conditioning systems have been reinforced so that the installation maintains the appropriate comfort temperature at all times, both for patients and healthcare personnel.

Different healthcare tasks

Since its creation, different actions have been carried out in the Alicante field hospital, and the most outstanding ones have been the seroprevalence study of the Ministry of Health and the performance of the PCR sample collection of COVID-19 in support of the primary care teams of the department, as well as surgical patients, with immunosuppressive treatments, etc. and to the State security bodies or derived by Public Health, among others.

In addition, in this space, two medical check-ups for COVID-19 patients were launched, both from the first wave and the successive ones. In its facilities, health personnel have been vaccinated against seasonal flu until the end of November, in support of the Preventive Medicine Service, and the COVID vaccine has been administered to professionals during the last week. Blood extractions from the Clinical Analysis Service have also been carried out.

Finally, in accordance with the protocol of the Department of Justice and Public Administrations, spaces were set up in the field hospital for migrants who required isolation because they were close contacts of people with positive CRP.
