The Thoracic Surgery team at Dénia Hospital is a benchmark in the diagnosis of pulmonary nodules

19 July 2022 - 14: 53

Thanks to the development of the MGOLL (Magnetic guided occult lesion localization) technique, the Thoracic Surgery Unit of the Hospital de Dénia has become a pioneer in the diagnosis of pulmonary nodules that are difficult to locate.

It is a safe and highly beneficial technique for the patient, because it allows minimally invasive surgery to be performed subsequently and avoids open chest surgery (thoracotomy). In addition, it has the great advantage of being scheduled days and even weeks before surgery and avoids the handling of radioactive materials.

According to Dr. José Alejandro González, a thoracic surgeon: “The procedure is harmless and is already being used for the detection of non-palpable tumors and sentinel nodes in breast cancer, gynecological and prostate cancers; but it was not previously used to detect pulmonary nodules. We have developed the necessary variants and adaptations of the technique, selected the specific material and developed its use at the pulmonary level in thoracic surgery”.

The technique has been launched in collaboration with the Radiology Service. Dr. González assures that since then and thanks to this technique, more than a dozen patients with pulmonary nodules that are difficult to locate have been able to benefit.

The Thoracic Surgery team of the Dianense health center is now a benchmark for this technique and there is already interest from other health centers in performing it and collaborating in its development at a national level in Catalonia and internationally in Great Britain.

The first results have been published in one of the most important national lung pathology journals with great international repercussion and have been presented at the Chest World Congress in Bologna, Italy.
