Two off-duty National Police officers who were enjoying their vacations with their friends in a Dénia hotel, saved the life of a man who had choked in the hotel restaurant by performing the Heimlich maneuver on him.

The events took place in the cafeteria of a well-known hotel in Dénia when the agents, accompanied by more friends and while they were enjoying a weekend of rest, heard screams and calls for help in the hotel cafeteria, coming quickly and observing when they arrived. to the buffet area a man lying on the floor who presented symptoms of suffocation and with a bluish skin tone on his face.

The agents, after assessing that this person could be suffering from suffocation due to choking and aware of the seriousness of the situation upon seeing that this person's life was in danger, coordinated to help him by lifting him from the ground between them to perform what is known as a "maneuver of Heimlich"; first aid procedure that is carried out when a person has the larynx obstructed by food or other foreign bodies, all while the event was being reported so that a SAMU callsign could travel to the place.

The effective practice of the aid maneuver practiced by the agents, quickly had the expected effect, getting the man to expel a piece of ham that was obstructing his larynx and causing him to suffocate.

Once the injured citizen began to breathe normally, he was seated in a chair where he began to recover while the arrival of the health services was awaited to verify that there were no complications.

Once the health services arrived at the hotel, they transferred the man to Hospital de Dénia as a precaution, who in a few hours was back at the hotel in perfect condition thanks to the diligent intervention of the agents.

The two agents who saved this person's life are assigned to the Judicial Police Brigade and the Citizen Security Brigade of the Elda-Petrer and Elche Police Stations, respectively.

The police training received by the Agents in first aid techniques was essential to save the life of the victim.

The Heimlich maneuver

This first aid maneuver is carried out on anyone who has suffered an accidental obstruction of the airways that prevents them from breathing normally, even causing total suffocation that can end with the death of the injured person if they do not act quickly.

Regarding the mechanism of the manoeuvre, in the first place, whoever practices it must stand behind the person suffering from suffocation, surrounding his body with his arms, and then, closing his hand and placing the knuckle of his thumb four fingers above of the navel, with the other hand, grab the fist of the first, then pressing strongly inwards and upwards towards the lungs, then releasing the pressure but without losing the point of application of the maneuver, repeating this sequence as many times as needed until the foreign body obstructing the airway is expelled.
