29 July 2022 - 14: 05

The City Council of Dénia approved in the plenary session held yesterday its incorporation into the Spanish Association of Creative Cities of UNESCO. This would entail being included in the statutes of this new entity. In addition, in plenary it was also approved to request their acceptance in said association as a founding member of it.

Spanish Association of UNESCO Creative Cities

The Spanish Association of Creative Cities of UNESCO is promoted by the ten Spanish Creative Cities that currently exist: Seville (music), Bilbao (design), Granada (literature), Dénia (gastronomy), Burgos (gastronomy), Barcelona (literature) , Terrassa (cinema), Llíria (music), Valladolid (cinema) and Manises (crafts and popular art), and its constitution has the approval and support of the Spanish National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO.

The group of Spanish creative cities designated by UNESCO has collaborated continuously on projects and initiatives since its formation at the Annual Meeting of Creative Cities held in Östersund (Sweden) in 2016, through bilateral collaborations or with the participation of all of them. To take this collaboration one step further, coordination is required through an association to achieve the necessary coordination in all Spanish creative cities, facilitate valid dialogue with national and international organizations and promote permanent collaboration and communication with the Commission. Spanish National Cooperation with UNESCO and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).

The creation of this new entity will allow joint action to defend the cultural identity and creative capacities of the cities declared "UNESCO Creative Cities", carrying out common projects and proposals to be presented and processed before the Spanish administrations and international institutions.

The proposal approved yesterday in plenary appoints the mayor of Dénia, Vicent Grimalt, as representative of the Dénia Town Hall in the governing bodies of the association and Raúl García de la Reina, as Councilor for Culture and International Relations, as his substitute. The director of the Office of Innovation and Creativity, Florentino Terrades, is also appointed as focal point in the «Permanent Technical Group of Focal Points» of the association.

Finally, the contribution of 1.200 euros to the association was approved as an annual fee from the Dénia City Council, and 500 euros as an entry fee. Both amounts will be satisfied in 2023.
