Tomorrow Thursday, the request of the City Council of Dénia for the 'Child Friendly City' recognition with which UNICEF Spanish Committee highlights those local governments committed to five objectives of promoting the well-being of children and adolescents and adolescents will be submitted to plenary vote participation of the youngest in public life.
These five objectives are:
1. Each child will be valued, respected and treated fairly within their communities.
2. The voices, needs and priorities of each child are heard and considered in public regulations and policies, in budgets and in all decisions that affect them.
3. All children have access to quality essential services.
4. They live in safe and clean environments.
5. And they have the opportunity to enjoy family life, play and leisure.
The Child Friendly Cities initiative, launched in Spain in 2001, has the general objective of promoting the application of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN, 1989) in the field of local governments. The granting of recognition allows municipal councils to apply for grants and grants to develop actions to promote children's rights.
To obtain this recognition, two initial requirements must be met that the City of Dénia has already implemented. On the one hand, the constitution of the Local Council for Children and Adolescents (CLIA), which took place on December 9, 2019.
The CLIA is made up of 26 counselors, 5th and 6th grade students from the 8 schools in the city that have joined: Lebeche, Las Vessanes, Montgó, Pozo de la Montaña, Cervantes, Raquel Payá , Paidos and Marists. The Council is a consultative and participatory body that was created to collect the right of children to “Express opinions freely” and what are these opinions "Be duly taken into account", right recognized in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The second measure establishes that there must be an interdepartmental coordination space to work on the drafting of a diagnosis of the city's situation and public policies in relation to children's rights. Just yesterday, Tuesday, February 25, the first meeting took place, with the participation of technicians from all municipal departments. This work commission will meet once a month until the diagnosis is completed, which in parallel is also working with the city's associations. This diagnosis will serve to specify the actions to be developed, which will be included in the future Dénia Children's Plan.
