HLA San Carlos advice to avoid back pain during confinement

27 March 2020 - 08: 28

With the decrease in physical activity caused by quarantine, it is very likely that back pain will appear. Doctor José Lizón, orthopedic specialist in spinal surgery and minimally invasive techniques at the Hospital HLA San Carlos, offers some recommendations to avoid these pains.

"It is very important to adopt a good posture when sitting down or when doing household chores to maintain a healthy back. If our posture is not adequate we can end up suffering contractures and that's when the back pain appears"says the specialist.

How to keep your back healthy

When it comes to teleworkingDr. Lizón advises keeping the screen at eye level and resting your forearms on the surface where we are working. It is also important to use a chair that allows us to maintain lumbar lordosis. If we do not have a suitable chair we can make use of a cushion or pillow.

To do household choresDr. Lizón advises sweeping or scrubbing holding the stick with one hand at shoulder height and the other hand at waist level. As far as possible we should do it with the broom or the mop close to the body, avoiding having the back bent and consequently suffering back pain. Other household tasks, such as ironing, can also cause discomfort in the spine if we do not do them correctly. As always, we should keep our back upright and ensure the height of the ironing board at the level of the diaphragm as a minimum to avoid having to bend over.

It is important to note, on the other hand, that while we restIf we do not do it properly, we can also cause pain. We must not forget that a third of our life passes while we sleep, so the posture adopted in bed decisively influences the appearance of these pains. In this sense, before sleeping it is important to do stretches. When getting into bed, try to avoid sleeping on your stomach, as it maximizes the lumbar curvature of the spine. Sleeping on your back is a recommended position as long as you put a pillow between your knees to prevent the lumbar spine from rotating. Without a doubt, the best sleeping position is to sleep on your side, since it allows you to adopt a fetal position on one side or the other and can be complemented by placing a pillow between your knees.

However, the best advice is to exercise at home, For example:

  • Abdominal series (hypopressive, isometric, lower and oblique)
  • Pelvic tilt
  • Yoga is also a very good type of exercise to avoid back pain
