Compromís has presented a new motion to the Territory Commission today that aims to agree with the rest of the groups to support the citizen initiative for a Law that guarantees the right to housing, promoted by several social organizations and that already has the support of many others.
As the manifesto explains, “in Spain, 36,1% of the population allocates more than 40% of their income to paying for housing and basic supplies, and thousands of other young households cannot even be established. In fact, only 18,5% of the population between 18 and 29 years old has become emancipated due to the enormous difficulties in accessing and maintaining stable housing ”.
“From Compromís Dénia, and also with the support of podem Dénia, we support this citizen initiative and we also want to count on the municipal corporation to jointly demand, among other issues, that the law guarantees the right to decent and affordable housing, that the evictions of vulnerable people be stopped and that the park be secured and expanded public social rental, at least twenty years, dealing with the residential emergency as a priority ”, explained the Valencian spokesman, Rafa Carrió.
In addition, among the measures to be agreed, it is urged a state regulation of rents at prices appropriate to the salaries of the population in each territory, guarantee the basic supplies of water, electricity, gas and access to telecommunications; guarantee an effective second chance for households with mortgage debt and develop measures against over-indebtedness and financial abuse; a budget extension for social housing and social housing policies until reaching the European average for public stock; and to ensure an active participation of the population in all housing and urban planning policy.
All this in the context in which the Government is preparing the so-called Law for the Right to Housing, the draft of which will enter the Council of Ministers imminently and will be sent to Congress for debate and approval. “It is essential that the Law for the Right to Housing incorporates these demands of affected people and civil society, therefore, we have to support the initiative, since it is an issue that affects our citizens, the dignity of people and the Human rights".
Finally, as the state of alarm and the current decree ends on May 9, and considering that from this date procedures will begin that will imply an explosion of evictions of vulnerable families, the agreements of the motion also require the extension of the current moratorium on evictions until the approval of the Housing Law that definitively avoids them.
