January 19 from 2018 - 07: 01

At the beginning of 2019 will begin to navigate the first ship propelled by natural gas from the Mediterranean towards the Balearics. Baleària, one of the pioneer shipping companies in the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) worldwide, presented on Thursday at the International Tourism Fair of Madrid the first two ferries powered by this clean energy that will operate in the Mediterranean. These are two innovative ships that are being built in the Italian shipyard Cantiere Navale Visentini.

President of Baleària, Adolfo Utor, noted that the company's commitment to the environment "It is a strategic determination, based on the use of liquefied natural gas, as well as other clean energies, and on the eco-efficiency of the fleet".

Utor explained that LNG allows reducing 30% carbon emissions (CO2), 85% nitrogen oxide (NOx) and totally eliminate sulfur and particulate emissions. The president remarked that "The use of this respectful fuel has an immediate impact on air quality and the greenhouse effect". These are two sustainable vessels where technology and digitalization will be at the service of energy efficiency, since in addition to dual fuel engines and LNG (with a power of 20.600 KW) these vessels will have photovoltaic panels, LED lighting or control of the trimming, among others.

Baleària will invest 200 millions of euros in the construction of these two smart ships pioneers in the Mediterranean, with identical characteristics: 186,5 meters in length, maximum speed of 24 knots and capacity for 810 people, 2.180 linear meters of cargo and 150 vehicles. "We are working on two smart ships where the digitalization of on-board services will be an added value, which will make the trip a unique experience", Explained Utor. So, these smart ships they will include video surveillance of pets, access to services on board via mobile and digital leisure on demand, among other services.

The president of Baleària has revealed that the new ships will be baptized as Hypatia of Alexandria y Marie Curie, "Two women scientists in the history of humanity, in line with one of the goals set by the Sustainable Development Goals: equality and the empowerment of women".

Before the presentation of the ships, the president of Baleària and the director of Wholesale Iberian Marketing of GAS NATURAL FENOSA, Joaquín Mendiluce, signed the first contract for the supply of bunkering of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the propulsion of ships in Spain, that Utor qualified as "strategic alliance". The supply agreement will be exclusively for 10 years and will initially be carried out in the ports of Barcelona, Valencia and Algeciras, extending to all the peninsular ports in which the shipping company operates, as well as to the entire new fleet powered by this fuel.

I do not know where this commercial action comes from, I do not know if it is purely for complying with regulations of antipollution or if on the contrary it is a human attitude, they are values or it is a transcendental proposition. Initially it is a very interesting proposal, it is our day what we want to take care of to have a better tomorrow. These contracts, agreements will have their help from the State, and if we clients are economically benefited much better, we must be responsible and respectful with our environment. Like a neighbor more when I see a curtain of polluted air floating on these precious Mediterranean waters saddens me and creates such impotence that sometimes I find it difficult to follow the look.
For many more good deeds, a hug.
