Dénia motorhome and camper regulations: where to camp, where to park and how to do it

25 June 2022 - 09: 00

Caravan or camper tourism is becoming more and more present in Dénia, which, since the City Council made a differentiation between parking and camping months ago, has been imposed above all on the coast. This has forced the council, in order to avoid friction with the neighbors, to modify the municipal traffic ordinance. Here we review the most notable novelties.

What is considered parking?

When we talk about motorhomes or camper vehicles, it is considered to park the use of the vehicle without deploying any element that exceeds the perimeter of the vehicle.

A dwelling vehicle is considered parked and not camped when:

  • It is in contact with the ground only through the wheels, not with stabilizer legs or other contraptions.
  • It occupies no more space than the vehicle in motion: no open projecting windows or any external equipment.
  • There is no fluid emission, except for those typical of engine combustion through the exhaust pipe.
  • It does not emit annoying noises for the neighborhood or users of the parking area.
  • The elevation of ceilings or the activity that takes place inside is irrelevant, if it does not transcend to the outside.

Maximum parking time or prohibition

The maximum parking time on urban roads for these vehicles is 48 hours in a row, and 24 hours in a row on the beachfront in a period of 7 days from the parking thereof, unless expressly prohibited.

How to carry out the maneuvers?

Home vehicles can stop and park on urban roads, under the same conditions as any other vehicle, provided that:

  • Do not hinder the movement of other road users in any way.
  • Do not constitute any type of risk for other road users.
  • Stay within the road markings that define the parking lot.
  • Prevent it from moving in the absence of the driver.

What is considered camping?

The use of the vehicle with the deployment of elements that exceed the perimeter of the vehicle.

Where to camp?

Camping with caravans in Dénia is exclusively reserved for authorized camping areas.

The problem is not the Spaniards, who are not many, the problem comes from abroad, especially from France, retirees are a plague; They come for free, they pay some tourist tax

  2. Patricia says:

This summer at Les Rotes has been even worse than others.
Dozens of motorhomes lined up, very high, denying the view of the sea to all the neighbors.
Taking tables, kitchen pots, eating out...
But what a shabby image for an area that is not cheap at all, precisely!
Those of us who pay the ibi there do not have the right to see a coastline since it is plagued and we have not seen any police pass by or fine anyone.
Having campsites I don't understand why they allow this.

    • Lili says:

What a horrible comment. It is a tourist area and of course they can cook and eat outside. This is not jail, okay?
It's very sad to see people who complain about everything and don't let others live. In fact, it is missing, as in many camping sites. Never ever forget that thanks to tourism and this people Denia begins to get ahead.
      Let people enjoy. Spot.

The problem is that for four that do not comply with the regulations, they do not respect anyone (and here I also include the vans, because they are the ones that do not comply with the regulations the most, because they do not have interior space and need to be outside for certain tasks ), We pay all the motorhomes and they include us all equally. As a general rule we are very respectful of the rules, we know them and we stick to them. I understand that there are people upset if they fail to comply or we exceed. Thanks.

  4. Fernando says:

Kiding you . Or be the
Spanish general norm , they can camp wherever they want as long as they do not take out the chairs or open windows . The same as now. And since nobody controls it and a fine is never imposed, there is no change. The same chaos continues and the views of most of the walks are private for campers.
We have denounced this dozens of times in Las Rotas and it is still a free campsite. The norm, intentionally? It does not clarify whether it is possible to sleep in the vehicles, etc. The city council does not reinforce the
Compliance so that the neighbors remain dissatisfied.

    • gonzalo says:

As long as chairs or awnings or anything that overwhelms the perimeter of the vehicle are not removed, IT IS NOT CAMPING. I am a motorhome driver and I understand what you are saying and it is very annoying that there are individuals who monopolize public land, harming residents above all, it should not be allowed, but not only the vehicles you mention, but all of them, including cars and vans and one way to achieve this is to regulate parking and prohibit parking for more than 24 hours in the same place or street (except residents) (for all vehicles, not just motorhomes), there must be rotation. Another thing is to sleep inside these vehicles or others (cars) as long as it does not transcend to the outside, we should not worry.

    • cease says:

Bitter, camping is not sleeping inside, usually many of us just spend the night and don't bother anyone, if your life is so sad it's not our fault, try to live and let live

After reading your publication, I would like to highlight (if you allow me and please), the error in your News…
From the same Headline and later during the development of the publication, they refer to Caravan, when they are really referring to Motorhome.

Keep in mind that the confusion is of special relevance, since the Caravan is technically a Trailer or Semi-Trailer and instead the Motorhome is a Motor Vehicle that has the same category as a family saloon... This is reflected in the General Traffic Regulations.

Consequently, the Regulatory and Legislative characteristics are completely different, as detailed in Instruction 08/V-74 of the Ministry of the Interior and the Mobility Manual obtained from the GT-53

Therefore, as the purpose is different; where the Caravan is designed to develop the activity of Camping, requiring specific place and facilities for its enjoyment.
On the other hand, the Motorhome is designed, approved, registered and taxed to live autonomously with the simple act of parking like any family sedan.
That is why its equipment, endowment, insulation and habitability are absolutely different.

The publication can confuse the reader who is unaware of the sector, create frustrations or false expectations for the rental, acquisition or enjoyment of the different options.

Another big difference is in the price. The difference between a Caravan and a Motorhome is truly substantial with more than €35.000 difference between them.

I offer to clarify any type of explanation, regulations, travel style and any detail regarding the Itinerant Tourism of Motorhomes or Camper, recognized as in the RGC as Housing Vehicles and thus offer the maximum truthfulness and rigor to its readers with publications adjusted to the reality of a Collective with more than 158.000 vehicles registered in Spain and more than 256.000 vehicles that visit our country every year from foreign countries.

I verify that they perfectly describe the difference between a Camped Vehicle and a Parked Vehicle. We approve and respect ALL Municipal Ordinances that do so, based on Instruction 08/V-74, as well as the Temporary Rotation of parking lots to avoid the Vocation of Permanence.

From the Colectivo Autocaravanista, we are the first interested in respecting the differences between vehicles, to carry out a scrupulous compliance with the Regulations and it is the communication and information media who must contribute to providing information or exact descriptions, away from ambiguity or lack of informative rigor.

Greetings and at your disposal again,

  6. Enrique says:

This sounds very much like the regular law in Spain. Parking is allowed, no extensions, awnings etc… be glad, because in Calpe it is much harder. But in denia it's really Camper unfriendly, because the next camping is in las rotas and next one is at km 12 in las Marinas,so far away…poor denia, other towns offer special parkings for motorhomes with old water dump and electricity for 10- 15 euros/day…See the Apps on Google play, please…
    Greetings Henry

    • Nacho COSTOYA says:

Denia is complying with the General Circulation Regulation and its corresponding Instruction 08/V-74 specifies for Motorhomes. That is why it allows PARKING and not CAMPING.

Camping sites, like Public or Private Areas, are an option, they can NEVER be an obligation as a solution to parking.

The Driver who wishes to stay long stays in Denia, will have to go to a Private area. In this way, it will facilitate the rotation and equitable distribution of parking spaces among all drivers, thus avoiding the Vocation of Permanence.

  7. IgnacioG says:

Thanks for clearing it up. Still there will be smartasses camping anywhere.

    • Nacho COSTOYA says:

Well, those vehicles that camp, instead of parking... Be sanctioned exemplary...!!

In this way they will stop committing illegalities and will benefit the entire Collective and all citizens.
