Dénia is about to open a new public space in the city centre: Plaça María Hervás. As shared on social media by the Councillor for Urban Planning, Maria Josep Ripoll, the final tests of lighting and public address systems are already underway, which indicates that the completion of the project is imminent. Yes, lighting and public address systems, because the place is going to be much more than a green space or a place to relax. María Hervás aspires to be, as the councillor promises, "an agora of culture" in the heart of Dénia.
This new urban enclave, conceived as a green and social space, will have a sound system for holding events and cultural activities. The City Council highlights its vocation to become a meeting point for citizens, reinforcing the role of the square as a modern agora in the heart of Dénia.
A start full of setbacks
The María Hervás square project was the winner of a pompous competition that was decided in December 2021, and the works were expected to begin in 2022. This was not the case. The project seemed cursed from the beginning because, when the first tender for the work was issued at the beginning of 2023, no construction company came forward to take charge of the work. With the competition void, the budget had to be readjusted, which seemed to be the main obstacle, and finally the offers arrived.
The works started at the end of 2023 and it was estimated that it would take four months to complete. This was the deadline, which indicated that it should have been finished between Fallas and Easter 2024. We now know that the calculations were very optimistic, as a series of difficulties soon began to appear.
Unexpected difficulties
During the excavations, underground elements were discovered, the foundations of the old clinic, which had not been foreseen and forced the project to be adapted. The works were halted in February, two months after they had started. Although it was planned that they would resume soon and there was even talk of finishing them before the summer, the workers did not return to the site until the end of May. Not only was it necessary to adapt the project, but the rise in the price of materials also destabilised the budget, which forced further delays.
The end of the works
But, yes, little by little the works advanced throughout the remainder of 2024 and are now about to be completed. Although they are still in full swing on the site, the truth is that the project will be completed in the next few days. According to Urbanismo, during the first half of February, Dénia will be able to enjoy its long-awaited, and promised, Plaza María Hervás.
Terrible... Denia does not deserve such a monstrosity. Where I imagined wood and vegetation... a cage that I see useful for the entrance of bous... Lamentable
My God, how ugly it is
A public release of FERRAILLEUR?
They already call it the PLAZA DE LOS HIERROS!
Grotesque, horrible, total lack of taste.
Is that what they want to call Agora?? Please don't offend!
What a shame!
Chicken coop cage?
Green space, that? Yes. Don't you see it? The color of those poles... It looks like a refinery. My goodness!
We need a Trump or a Milei to come and put things in order because “things are starting to go astray” a bit. What style does Benidorm, Altea, Ibiza, Estepona… and Denia have? Denia has no style! It is a collection of “things” of different styles stuck together like “mess”. My goodness! How easy it would have been to put down soil-gravel and 50 large trees in a low-cost but “natural” way…. They don’t want a Law on the Regeneration of Nature? Ah, but not for them! Only for you!! For what they have done, having made a 5-storey high-rise car park… At least it would have made money. Those who have decided this should NOT govern Denia again. Denia does not deserve this.
Ugly, ugly, ugly. With this kind of "things" a town loses all its personality. Ugly, ugly. And the City Hall showing off.
What a joy all this noise will bring to the neighbors.
Shameless, calling this expensive junk a cultural agora
If they call two containers superimposed on this square a bus station, they can call it anything.
Long live progress!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't know what this square is like, but as for what they call the bus station, it's a real disgrace... depressing, unbelievable, unfair!!
The awnings will last as long as winter in Denia
Another monstrosity from the City Hall, what a monstrosity
A space that instead of being called Plaza de la gamba roja, is called Plaza de María Hervás, a woman that no one has heard of.
Simply shameful.
Lots of iron columns. As in the case of the roof of what is called part of the Wall next to the Music School, it will soon rust and need continuous maintenance. In the case of the aforementioned roof, this is not done.
Personally, I would have put a nice fountain, some trees and some benches, with a nice granite floor. I don't like this AT ALL.
What I see are many iron beams and some awnings. Now I don't know if it's with lights and a megaphone. It looks more like a supermarket. Where is the culture? I haven't seen it anywhere.
New supermarket, Mercaconsu, the colors of our 2 emblematic stores 🤣
